Both calcium and magnesium are critical nutrients that support multiple facets of our health. Both minerals are needed for healthy bone density, muscle contraction, nervous system balance, energy production, blood pressure and cardiovascular function*. Available evidence suggests our diets routinely fall short of our calcium and magnesium needs for optimal health despite widespread food fortification programs*. Several modern lifestyle patterns may also deplete our bodies of these important minerals, including alcohol or caffeine consumption, exercise or excessive sweating, use of common prescription drugs, and unmanaged stress*.
Modern diets are commonly inadequate in both calcium and/or magnesium, since these minerals are often lost during food processing and many people still fall short of the recommended intakes for leafy greens, legumes, nuts, seeds and true whole grains. While calcium and magnesium are common nutrients in multivitamin/multi-mineral supplements, many products use inexpensive, poorly-digested forms such as oxide, carbonate, or chloride forms which may contribute to unwanted gastrointestinal symptoms*. Additionally, many once-daily supplements can only provide a fraction of the daily needs for calcium or magnesium since these minerals are so bulky and take up a large amount of space. As such, you will often see calcium and/or magnesium packaged as stand-alone formulas to be taken in addition to daily multi-nutrient formulas such as our AM/PM multivitamins.
Life Time chose the malate forms of these minerals based on the highly-absorbable nature and minimal chance for gastrointestinal irritation. The malic acid used in these mineral forms is easily used by our cells to produce energy (ATP) in addition to helping deliver easily digested calcium and magnesium. The 1:1 ratio of calcium to magnesium is intended to support adequate magnesium amounts without exceeding acceptable calcium intake levels given that so many common foods are highly fortified with calcium but not as many are fortified with magnesium.
